The Shannara Chronicles is a twenty-episode American television series developed by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, based on the literary series The Shannara Chronicles by writer Terry Brooks and more specifically the novel The Elfstones of Shannara. It aired between January 5, 2016 and November 22, 2017 on MTV for the first season and then on Spike for the second season. In this article, we are going to tell you whether you can expect a third season of The Shannara Chronicles or not.
There will be no season three of The Shannara Chronicles, simply because the series was officially canceled back in 2017 and the attempts to ship it to another network failed, after which the series was officially concluded. This was quite unfortunate as the first two seasons adapted only one of the three novels from the trilogy, so the other two were never even touched upon.
The rest of this article is going to bring you all the known and unknown information related to the potential third season of The Shannara Chronicles. You’re going to find out about its potential release date, whether there is a trailer, what the story could be about, and much more about this intriguing fantasy series that ended way too early.

Will The Shannara Chronicles Season 3 happen?
Sonar Entertainment and Farah Films acquired the production rights to the Shannara universe back in 2012. In December 2013, it was announced that a television series based on the books was being produced by MTV and had been given a straight-to-series, 10-episode order without going through the pilot-episode process.
On April 20, 2016, MTV greenlit a second season of The Shannara Chronicles. Casting of the lead roles took place between November 2014 and March 2015, in this order: Poppy Drayton, Aaron Jakubenko, Austin Butler Manu Bennett, Ivana Baquero, John Rhys-Davies, Brooke Williams, Daniel MacPherson, Marcus Vanco, and James Remar.
On October 10, 2015, during New York Comic Con, MTV announced that the broadcast of the first season will begin on Tuesday, January 5, 2016, just behind the flagship series Teen Wolf. On April 20, 2016, the series was renewed for a second season of ten episodes. On February 1, 2017, Malese Jow, Vanessa Morgan, Gentry White, Caroline Chikezie, and Desmond Chiam joined the main cast in the second season.

On May 11, 2017, it was announced that the Spike channel would pick up the airing of the series from the second season following MTV’s decision to reduce the number of fiction on its program. This ten-episode season aired from October 11, 23,24 to November 22, 2017 on Spike. On January 16, 2018, the series was canceled after two seasons, with the producers confirming that they would be shopping the series to another network. This ultimately failed and the series was later considered officially concluded.
It’s been three years and with the series having been officially canceled, there is absolutely no chance of it continuing; Western television simply doesn’t work that way (unlike the world of anime series, for example). When a series that doesn’t have a long-lasting tradition gets canceled, it’s usually done so a third season of The Shannara Chronicles is almost impossible.
What could be a possibility is a remake, i.e., a new series that would be based on the same material but that would be a completely new project we know nothing about at this moment. As things stand now, The Shannara Chronicles are a thing of the past and there is no intention, currently, for the series to continue.

What could be the plot of The Shannara Chronicles Season 3?
Since the first two seasons adapted only the second novel of the trilogy, The Elfstones of Shannara from 1982, we know that any potential season would have to tackle the first and third novels from the trilogy. There is a lot of material there, so there would’ve been at least three additional seasons, had the series not been canceled at one point. But, if someone actually decides to continue it at any point in the future, here is what we can expect:
The Sword of Shannara begins centuries after the events from the prequel novel (First King of Shannara), which have introduced the Ohmsford family of Valle d’Ombra. Flick lives with his parents and runs the family inn with his half-brother Shea, of elven origin on his father’s side.
One night the mysterious Allanon, the last survivor of the Druids of Paranor, arrives in Shadow Valley with the news that Brona, the Warlock Lord, who everyone thought to be a legend of the past, has returned to look for Shea, the last living descendant of Jerle Shannara and therefore the only one able to use the power of the Sword of Shannara.
After giving Shea three magical stones as protection, Allanon orders Shea to immediately leave Shadow Valley and join him in Culhaven. The appearance that same night of the Skull Messengers – powerful agents of the Warlock Lord – in search of the last descendant of the Shannara convinces Shea to leave.
Shea convinces Flick to travel to the nearby town of Leah to seek help from their friend Menion Leah, adventurer and best hunter in the Southlands. En route to Culhaven, the capital of the Dwarf nation, Shea must summon the power of Elfstones, imbued with elven magic, to emerge unscathed from the Mist Marshes.
Arriving in Culhaven, the three friends find Allanon in the company of the dwarf warrior Hendel, Durin and Dayel Elessedil, cousins of the Elven king, and Balinor Buckhannah, crown prince of Callahorn and commander of the Frontier Legion. The group travels to the Hadeshorn, where Allanon consults with the spirit of Bremen.
Bremen’s prophecy reveals that one of the members will be separated from the group, but will be the first to get his hands on Shannara’s sword. In fact, along the way through the Dragon’s Teeth, Shea stumbles and falls into the river below without anyone being able to prevent him. Once in Paranor, the group finds the fortress manned by Gnome soldiers and a Skull messenger who almost overwhelms Allanon by ambushing him in the fortress’s forges.
Noting the disappearance of the Sword of Shannara, Flick, Allanon and Menion set out in search of Shea while Durin, Dayel, Balinor and Hendel are busy gathering their peoples and preparing them for the battle of Callahorn, where the army of the Warlock Lord is ready to attack the positions garrisoned by the Legion of the Frontier.
The Wishsong of Shannara starts with Allanon returning to the Four Lands and introducing himself to Brin Ohmsford to involve her in her new mission to destroy the Ildatch. The Mortombre, from their fortress of Graymark in the Eastern Lands, have subjugated the Gnomes, forcing them to march against the Dwarves.
Furthermore, they have seized the Springs of the Silver River, poisoning its waters and endangering the health of all the Four Lands. Brin’s magical song is believed by Allanon to be the only way to penetrate the Maelmord and destroy the Ildatch. Together with Brin and Allanon part Rone Leah, great-grandson of Menion Leah and bearer of the Sword of Leah, who is elected protector of Brin.

Young younger brother Jair Ohmsford is left at home, despite his pleas. Unexpectedly, one evening, Jair notices a patrol of gnomes in front of the house led by the batter Slanter and a Death Shade. Jair manages to break into the house and retrieve the Elfstones from the secret hideout where his father Wil had hidden them, then flee north in an attempt to reach Leah.
However, Slanter manages to capture him and decides to hand him over to the rest of the patrol. The latter runs into Garet Jax and is exterminated. Garet Jax then decides to take Slanter and Jair with him to Culhaven, the capital of the Dwarves.
In the night Jair dreams of the King of the Silver River, who entrusts him with a double mission: on the one hand, he gives him a bag of dust capable of healing the waters of the Silver River; on the other hand, managing to complete the mission before Brin penetrates the Maelmord, he entrusts him with the power to use the Song once to create reality and not an illusion, thus saving Brin’s life otherwise destined to irremediably fail.
Once in Culhaven, Jair appears in front of the Council of Dwarves and, thanks to the power of the Song, which allows him to illustrate the visions transmitted to him by the King of the Silver River, he obtains permission to leave for the Source of Heaven accompanied by five volunteers: Slanter, Garet Jax, Crown Prince of the Elves Edain Elessedil, son of Ander, the giant Frontier fighter Helt and the dwarf Elb Foraker.
